The true definition of hero is a man of distinguished valor. Bravery, courage, intrepidity, boldness, daring, and prowess in war are a heroes characteristics. However a hero is understood to be different to everyone. To one person he may be the greatest being who ever lived, but to another he may just be a normal, average man.
For example, a child who has lost his poor puppy may think of its rescuer as a savior. His hero could be none other than a mere gentlemen who saw the missing companion and returned it to the thankful boy.
Or perhaps in extremity, a hero could be a trained specialist who has foiled a terrorist plot of havoc. Everyone who was in jeopardy by this single anarchist would be highly appreciative of the man who saved them.
These two examples are of people who have rescued or saved something; life. But there are other qualities or tasks. A child at a baseball game witnessing his first homerun may admire the player who hit it, and strive to be just like him. Someone to look up to. Another hero may even be from the past. Someone you know nothing about, except for what he has accomplished, his mark on the world. This hero is immortalized because of his great deeds. Another hero could even be someone you know everything about and love the greatest.
A hero could be male or female. Black or white. From the present or past. There is no discretion. The perfect hero is one who will defy the odds. One who will do the morally correct thing no matter what. A true hero wont let you down. A hero will give you opportunity to worship him without regret. The hero presents himself when given the chance, yet he doesnt search for it. A hero doesnt look for adoration, he is humble.
My hero is my grandfather, Joseph Christopher Fischer Sr. I look up to him, he is my idol, I adore him. I love everything about him, I strive to be exactly like him.
My grandfather grew up in Manhattan with his parents and sister. He met my grandmother at age 12 and through the years they grew to love each other. They married just prior to his leaving to serve four years with the US navy during World War 2. He served throughout the world in various countries as a torpedoman on the USS Herndon.
When the war ended, he returned to his wife and became a port authority cop in New York City for several years. He left that job to begin a great career with a myriad of memories and great stories as a bonus; he joined the New York Police Department. He worked in many of the boroughs such as Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. He retired as a detective in Staten Island where his family now lived. Since then hes had numerous jobs, three children, and 12 grandchildren. Hes still going strong at age 73 as a security guard at Ocean County College.
My grandfather is my hero because of his lust for justice, his desire to never give up, as well as his generous, loving nature. He represents every characteristic of a hero that I aforementioned. Bravery, courage, intrepidity, boldness, daring, and prowess in war. He is a true, perfect hero. My hero.
